Brexit Blinkered Crisis
Brexit? Never heard of it. Well I can dream can’t I? Ok so it is very important, not only to us as individual citizens of the UK, but to business too. It does need sorting out, make it work for everyone. Failure to do so is in nobody’s best interest. Don’t let’s kid ourselves though that this is the only and most important political issue that is happening to the UK right now. Brexit is blinkering everyone who is concerned soley with it, than the issues already going on in the UK, from before we ever went down the Brexit road.
Let’s face facts, neither the EU nor Brexit is the cause of social discord or anger from the supporters of the Jeremy Corbyn lead Labour Party. Their valid reason for standing up and talking about issues other than Brexit are totally reasonable and understandable. Poverty, homelessness, Universal Credit, low paid jobs, zero hour contracts and more, are here because of our own Government in place right now. The Conservative Government, and partially I have to agree, the neo-liberal right sided Labour MP’s.
Also it is reasonable to see in social media that celebrity status holding people, who themselves live quite reasonably wealthy lifestyles, are blinkered too. We are Labour supporters they cry, yet not Labour under Mr. Corbyn. Then they go on a righteous rampage of why he is not suitable for Prime Minister, let alone Labour leader. Blinkered to the real world around them, they live in cosseted bubbles, enough money and food and can afford pay their bills. Real life poverty and homelessness is as fiction to them as the characters they portray in their celebrity world, being well paid to do so. Take off the blinkers celebrities, real people are dying, going hungry, living on the street, all because you think supporting Jeremy Corbyn is wrong for your own selfish reasons. If you support Labour, you should be supporting it’s very cause, to tackle these social issues of deprivation and hardship, not self serve your own fame.
Then we have Main Stream Media, particularly BBC and newspapers of dubious right wing leaning, strangling democracy at every opportunity. Press and TV millionaires, and some billionaires, who are as far away from real people and their struggles as Jupiter is away from Earth. We know this from history, media and press usually side with power, yet this time they are deciding the power and rules too. Do not listen to rich and famous TV personalities saying we are all going to be OK, or we all in this together. Their together is only themselves and their elite wealthy backers. The WE are us the real people, society, we are in this together. We are struggling, we are weakening, but we should stand up together and fight back.
The reasons, excuses and lies too thrown at Jeremy Corbyn and Labour as to why we should not vote them in are a total fabrication of falsehoods. I am not going to say there is no bad people in the party, I am not going to say it is squeaky clean on racism, religous tolerance or other issues that I totally agree should be rooted out. In fact I believe it should be rooted out not only by Labour from an internal perspective, but using external authorities too, as a matter of transparency. This should be done as a priority, but it can also be done alongside the Labour Party getting into power. If you truly believe in the cause of looking after the many and not the few, that should be your aim.
If we are going to believe we can only rid the Labour Party of bad whilst only in opposition, or under another leader, then that is a huge misapprehension. It is also lethal to the people of the UK to allow the Conservatives to destroy the country because of this.
Remember them that are without sin? The Tories are not squeaky clean, and further away from clean itself than Labour could ever be accused of. DWP crimes against humanity, the Windrush scandal, Grenfell still ongoing. That is only recent pain caused by the Tories, lest we forget Hillsborough, Orgreave and many more from the 1980’s and beyond. Racism is rife more so in the Tory Party, as are other forms of discrimination. Remember they are closer to UKIP, BNP and other right wing thinking fascists and racists than you think.
So a little bit of perspective please, yes Brexit is extremely important. Get it sorted please for the sake of everyone, but don’t do it at the expense or ignorace of other failings. Poverty and the human misery of UK citizens is very real, it is more important to us all as individuals than Brexit, yes I will say that. We recently had a UN report by Philip Alston OHCHR Special Rapporteur on extreme poverty and human rights. In it he describes the issues of people and families living daily under this Government, who he also adds are not concerned about these issues, or ignore there existance. Nice to know our own Government are not concerning themselves about us, the voters, the electorate that put them into their seats. Yet the ones that are concerned, mostly Labour and expecially under the leadership of Jeremy Corbyn, are not given a fair hearing. They, and I will say myself too, as a Labour supporter and member, believe in the equality and fairness for all in society. Let’s stand together, fight this together and make a better UK, Britain for the many and not the few.
Thank you.
Darren Sunderland.
